About SSCo.

Songbird’s goods are sewn from high-quality, unique materials found in thrift stores, tag or estate sales, and flea markets. All items are designed and handmade in our studio in upstate New York. Our goal is to create simple, sustainable, and functional designs while incorporating recycled textiles. Your item is guaranteed to be one-of-a-kind.

SSCo. was founded in 2015, the year we came home to Upstate New York. It was a crazy time to start a family business, but it took off and we’ve never looked back!

Owners and the brand

We have been sailing for years. As a young couple we spent a lot of time racing in regattas on Oneida Lake in Upstate NY and dreamed of owning our own boat. Our “someday”. Fast forward and two kids later, we purchased a small sailboat after moving to Long Island. We taught our kids to sail and spent most of our free time on the water. Eventually we were able to escape the corporate sales grind and move back to upstate NY, and we upgraded to a boat that we live on in the summer. Eli lovingly named the boat Sweet Thing, after me, and now we split our time between the woods of the Tug Hill Plateau in the foothills of the Adirondacks and Sackets Harbor located on Lake Ontario. Literally living our “someday” dream! Through the years I have always joked with Eli that “if I were to get a tattoo, it would be a Sailor Jerry anchor with his name on it”. We are both fond of the artist’s work, his grit and the vintage Americana vibe.

The Logo

Sailors, A Homecoming, and A Sweet Heart = our New Logo

Swallow tattoos, rich in history and symbolism all over the world, have been linked to health, wealth, loyalty, and the rigors of long-distance travel. In addition to indicating that a sailor had sailed 5000 miles, swallows were also associated with the idea of returning home. At sea, the anchor was the most secure object in a sailor's life, making it the perfect representation of stability. This is why they were often emblazoned with the name of a sailor's sweetheart. It's a reminder of what kept a sailor steady. We felt that this was the perfect image for our family business, that it represents who we are and the brand that we have created together.

Designer

Reneé loves fashion, fabric, thrift store and vintage clothing. She taught herself to sew right before her first child was born in 2009, and has been designing and creating hand sewn items ever since.

Long obsessed with fabric and textiles, Reneé would often buy clothing only to use the fabric in other projects. After making bags and other items as gifts for family and friends, Reneé started receiving orders, and that is how the Songbird Sewing Company was born. Songbird is focused on creating handmade items in small batches. Reneé lives with her husband and two beautiful children in upstate New York
